Few persons have ever lived who exerted more positive influence in
their time than John Wesley. His prodigious life and work, spanning
most of the eighteenth century, epitomized an evangelical revival that
changed the face of England, setting in motion forces of righteousness
that continue to have reverberations throughout the world. The passion
of his life, giving direction to all he said and did, was a burning
desire that every person yield themselves fully to the claims of
Christ. He was truly an evangelist aflame for God. John Hong in theses
pages captures that passion. He has carefully researched his subject,
and with the objectivity of a scholar, tells the story as it is. There
is nothing superficial, nothing far-fetched in the account --- the
facts speak for themselves. Wesley comes alive. You feel the fresh
winds of the countryside; you hear the hoofbeats of his horse as he
rides across the land preaching the gospel. More than great history,
this is combustible reading.
—Robert E. Coleman, Ph.D Professor Emeritus of Evangelism at
Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Director of the Billy Graham
Institute of Evangelism at Wheaton College
This is a book that every pastor should read….Hong has shown us
that evangelism was the center of Wesley’s ministry and early
Methodism and that unless we too are engaged in the task of evangelism
we are simply passing our time frivolously….The breadth of this book
is remarkable and is lucidly written. For those who have read widely
in Wesley Studies they will find interesting details here that have
often been overlooked….Hong shows us that Wesley was a man very much
engaged in conversation with his peers and that his opinions as well
as his theology were formed out a web of deep intrigue involving
numerous religious and political figures….The last chapter in this
book particularly offers a corrective understanding of the
relationship between life and doctrine, showing that Wesley’s
evangelism effectively used Christian apologetics. For those who are
newcomers to Wesley Studies, this work is reader-friendly and provides
a delightful narrative of the main events in Wesley’s life and
ministry with the theme of evangelism as the integrating theme. This
is a scholarly work and well-documented, but it is also inspirational
and challenges one to re-examine one’s spiritual priorities.
